Meet Your Coordinator

Meet Your Coordinator: Hilary Griffiths – Association for New Canadians

Meet Your Coordinator is a series where we interview your Youth Ventures coordinators so that you can get to know them. We are back again for the 2019 Youth Ventures season, and today we have Hilary Griffiths at Association for New Canadians in St. John’s.

What is your name?

Hi everyone! My name is Hilary Griffiths.

What Youth Ventures site are you based out of?

This summer I am based out of the Association for New Canadians.

What are some of your favourite hobbies?

I love being able to spend time with my friends and family, whether that be hanging out and watching tv, grabbing a bite to eat or heading out for the night!

What’s your favourite movie?

I have three favourite movies. The Parent Trap, Spice World (The Spice Girl Movie), and The Princess Diaries.

What is your favourite band?

All-time favourite band is the Spice Girls, and I am super stoked to be seeing them this summer in London! …. and Nickelback is a guilty pleasure of mine. Some may say I have poor taste LOL.

What is your favourite restaurant?

My family fave is definitely Swiss Chalet, other than that I love Pita Pit, KFC and Wing n’ it.

Do you have any pets?

I have an adorable Pom named Zoe, and a handsome Chocolate Lab named Henry! But my dad is a hobby farmer so if you want to be technical we could throw some sheep and cows in the mix!

What does entrepreneurship mean to you?

Entrepreneurship to me means a whole bunch of things. It is having the opportunity to be your own boss, giving you the flexibility to create your own work/life balance. But it also means that you have to be committed and dedicated enough to push for your business and be willing to take risks to ultimately become successful.

What is the coolest business you heard of?

I couldn’t possible pick just one! I definitely want to check out one of St. John’s coolest new business, The Rec Room.

What are you looking forward to most this summer?

I’m looking forward to continue building relationships with not only participants, but the other coordinators as well. We have a great group of coordinators running the program, so with their help, our participants are destined for success!

What are some interesting business opportunities you see in your region?

The possibilities are endless! With an aging population across Newfoundland and Labrador, I think any business that focuses on our elders needs would be an interesting venture.

What do youth in NL need to know about Youth Ventures?

Youth in Newfoundland and Labrador need to know that Youth Ventures is an awesome way to make some extra money. You may not be interested in running a full time business, but there is nothing wrong with a little side hustle for some extra spending money!

What is the most important thing people of any age who want to start a business need to know?

I’ll answer this one with a quote from Zig Zigler, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”.

How can people get in touch with you if they’d like to talk about starting a business?

If anyone has any questions they can get ahold of me in a few ways. One of them being through email, at, or if someone would like to pop into my office, I am located at 10 Smithville Cres., in the Association for New Canadians building, with AXIS Career Services.
