Meet Your Coordinator is a series where we interview your Youth Ventures coordinators so that you can get to know them. We are back again for the 2019 Youth Ventures season, and today we have Josh Merrigan at CBDC Trinity Conception in Carbonear.
What is your name?
What Youth Ventures site are you based out of?
What are some of your favourite hobbies?
Playing guitar, hiking, camping, reading books, watching sports.
What’s your favourite movie?
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
What is your favourite band?
It’s hard to pick a favourite, there are so many good ones. Probably Fleetwood Mac though.
What is your favourite restaurant?
Again it’s hard to pick a favourite because there are lots of great restaurants, especially in Newfoundland, but probably Piatto.
Do you have any pets?
Yes, a mini golden doodle named Kasmir.
What does entrepreneurship mean to you?
Entrepreneurship to me, means taking something you are good at and sharing it with other people in a way that you can make an income from it.
What is the coolest business you heard of?
It’s hard to pinpoint what the coolest business I’ve heard of is because there are so many ways to define a cool business. Apple is certainly up there because of the way they revolutionized the smartphone. So are Tesla and Space X.
What are you looking forward to most this summer?
Being able to help young entrepreneurs turn their ideas or desire to be in business into a viable venture.
What are some interesting business opportunities you see in your region?
Most of it revolves around tourism or creating/selling artisan goods. There is always room for opportunities in green technology and green product development as well though.
What is the most important thing people of any age who want to start a business need to know?
Be confident in your ideas. Lots of people have great ideas and never follow through with them. If everyone did this the world wouldn’t have a lot of the great products and services that we have today. If you don’t have expertise in one area there is almost certainly someone out there who is willing to help.
What do youth in NL need to know about Youth Ventures?
That Youth Ventures is happy to help them turn their desire to be an entrepreneur into a business that they can be proud of. We have something for youth at every step of the entrepreneurial ladder, whether it is assistance with planning, marketing, or connecting them with mentors.
