We are excited to share our 2021 Trailblazer of the Year Winner, Dawson Greene (Bay St. George, NL) for his business, Green Head Growers!
Here’s Dawson’s story…
In the Beginning
Green Head Growers uses a greenhouse, built by Dawson and his business partner, that grows produce with a hydroponic system to reduce water usage and operate year-round.
Dawson explains that, “We started this business primarily to create jobs and boost the economy for our community, also we realized that the quality of produce in our province isn’t the best and would like to ensure that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have access to quality fresh produce.”
Why Entrepreneurship?
Dawson started Green Head Growers to benefit his community, but the personal benefits are undeniable. Dawson enjoys being able to work on his own terms and being in charge of setting goals for himself and his business.
Making it Happen with Youth Ventures
Youth Ventures were a great help to Dawson in the areas of advertising and networking. They guided him through promoting his business and connected him with a community of business owners like him! Their support allowed him to tackle challenges with Green Head Growers, like struggling with the structural integrity of the greenhouse and needing to relocate their operations.
What’s Next
Now that Dawson has successfully installed his hydroponic system in a new greenhouse, he explains that, “The next step for my business is to successfully operate year-round while keeping the bottom line in the green.”
Dawson also hopes to sell their produce at local grocers in the Bay St. George area in the near future!
Moment of Reflection
For anyone considering becoming an entrepreneur, Dawson has these words of wisdom: “never give up when things go wrong because failure is the greatest teacher.”
